| The patriotic quest of Robert the Bruce, King of Scots, to free his land of foreign domination reached its climax at the battle of Bannockburn. By the summer of 1314 only one last major stronghold, Stirling Castle, remained in the grip of Scotland's English overlords. It was now that King Edward II of England, desperate to recover ground lost since his father's death, led a huge and seemingly irresistible army forwards. So it was at the Burn (or small stream) at Bannock, the Scottish army prepared to fight back. SAC's chess set accurately depicts both sides of the conflict. The Scots are represented by Robert the Bruce as King, Elizabeth de Burgh as Queen with William Lamberton and Sir James Douglas as Bishop and Knight respectively. The English are led by King Edward and Queen Elizabeth of France with Archbishop of Canterbury Walter Reynolds as Bishop and Gilbert De Clare as Knight. |
