The characters in the chess set all have strong connections with the Cathedral. The King is represented by King Henry IV of England who reigned from 1399-1413, whilst his Queen is Joan of Navarre, the Spanish-born Queen of England who reigned from 1452 up until the time of Henry's death. Thomas Becket - probably the most famous of the Archbishops of Canterbury - plays out his role as Bishop. |
